My morning commute by bicycle today. You can hear the symphony of bikes and bells as they move through space and time. It’s so incredible to be part of this masterpiece.

Today was the first time I ‘succeeded’ in doubling on a bike. My husband was driving the bike and I hopped on the back rack, side-saddle. A bit of struggling the fist time.
The second time It wasn’t that difficult at all.
I can check ✔️ this mandatory task off my list.

[Cycling in Amsterdam]

Today I picked my bicycle up at Amsterdam Central Station from Swapfiets. It’s a pretty Dutch orange, single speed, break in the peddles. I’m totally happy with it.
My Dutch husband and I road around Amsterdam today, stopped at a lovely corner cafe in the sun for some bitterballen (my favorite Dutch “fast-ish” food). We had some fun riding around the city, finding where the university of Amsterdam is and my bus stop. All very important places for me for the next 3 weeks.
Tomorrow is the academic opening & welcome drinks... not too shabby. 😉

I also met some wonderful people in my cohort today, all very passionate. I can’t wait for the program, Planning the cycling city to begin!

First day out on the bicycle since arriving back in holland from our side vacation. Riding a bike is such a normal activity and yet it is so beautiful.

[THE HILLS ARE ALIVE WITH MUSIC]

Arrived in Amsterdam just over a week ago. Finally over jet lag and half way through our vacation, within a vacation.
We started in Maastricht, NL. This is one city that actually has hills and the mist gorgeous greenery.
and headed through Germany to Switzerland to Gruyere in the Swiss Alps. I still can’t get over the beauty. The hilly mountain sides were filled with cows and goats, you could hear their bells everywhere. Why Gruyere? We’ll for the cheese of course. We had a fantastic fondue with Gruyere cheese.

Today I’m packing my bags. I’m heading to a very magical place for me. I’ll be in The Netherlands for the better part of the summer. I’m so looking forward to stress free cycling.
My home base will be in Haarlem, just 20km outside of Amsterdam. Riding a bike there is easy, the cycling traffic is heavy but not crazy.
Cycling in Amsterdam is, however, a completely different beast. Did you know that Amsterdam has the most aggressive cyclists in all of The Netherlands? But not in a bad way. That’s right. It’s because there are so many cyclists on the road at any given time and the traffic needs to keep moving. The pace is quick, cycling is close, and signaling is subtle, if you’re not paying attention you’ll miss it.
There’s a lot going on in the streets and it takes a bit of time to get use to it. I know this from experience. I’m not going to lie, in the beginning it will be stressful. I’ll keep you posted on my adventure as I cycle in morning rush hour in Amsterdam as I travel to the University if Amsterdam for my morning commute.
I hope to make time for photos of the morning madness.
Do you have any experience cycling in The Netherlands? I’d love to hear it.

It’s the start of Bike to work week. Are you new to this? Here’s a few tips to help out. ⠀
⠀
★ If your ride is under 6km, dress for your day, not the bike. Wear layers that can be removed as you warm up. ⠀
⠀
★ You don’t have to wear spandex to ride a bike⠀
⠀
★ A stylish bag or Pannier to hold your lunch and other necessities is perfect ⠀
⠀
What’s in your bag?
