Here it is: Challenge #28 for tomorrow.
#healthymeBNC

Reading is a great way to relax for everyone! We tend to forget how important reading is as our lives get busier and as we get older that time spent reading for pleasure is filled with work, school and other responsibilities. Reading a book, versus an online article, improves our verbal skills, concentration, memory and imagination while reducing our stress levels!

For today's challenge we ask you to spend 20-30+ minutes reading for pleasure. Not for work, school or anybody else, just you! Whether it is fiction or non-fiction, pick something you enjoy and share it with us!

Got a great workout in this afternoon while Henry napped. Love being able to workout at home. Doesn't always happen, but today is a good day!! Made myself do it even though wasn't super motivated - lacking in sleep a little after a busy week, paired with a teething babe. Needed to clear my mind and man do I feel so much better! I challenge you to get moving today! It's not to late! If you're not feeling it, just go out for a stroll and see how much better you feel!! #healthymeBNC #move #mentalhealth #fitness #fitfam #balance #santecentre

Hiking is one of our favorite past times. There is nothing like getting out of the city and into the woods to explore! Not only does hiking improve cardio-respiratory and muscular fitness, but it also lowers the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high bp and depression.

For this challenge take a day hike, whether it's half an hour or three, get out and enjoy the wilderness! Don't forget to share which hike you did and your experience! :)

Did you know that Epsom Salts are made up of magnesium and sulfate, which are readily absorbed through our skin ?

Magnesium is SO important for our bodies, and is depleted when we are under stress, making many people deficient! It plays a key role in regulating enzyme activity, reducing inflammation, relieving muscle and joint pain and so much more! Sulfates help absorb nutrients and flush toxins! This is crucial for a healthy digestive system.

For this challenge we ask you to relax with a warm epsom salt bath! Try adding a candle, soft music or an essential oil (to your bath) for added serenity! Be sure to share this experience with us!

Deep breathing is a great stress reduction tool to practice and make a daily habit. For times when you would like to relax, de-stress and/or relieve tension this 10 minute exercise is amazing! When we concentrate on breathing deeply our brain sends signal to the rest of our body. These signals improve oxygen delivery to our tissues, release endorphins, improve detoxification, lowers blood pressure and tells our muscles to relax!

Try using the video below by syncing your breathe with the expanding shape! Use this time to free your mind of any stress/worries and enjoy these few minutes to yourself! Don't forget to share your experience with us!

It's time to boost that digestive system !! The benefits of ginger tea are endless! This delicious tea stimulates digestion, relieves menstrual discomfort, stomach pain and IBS symptoms. It is an anti-microbial that helps manage glucose levels, weight loss, circulation, stress and inflammation!

For this challenge have a cup of ginger tea 15-20 minutes before your meal to fire up your digestive system. If you do not have ginger tea, you can always add 1 tsp to 1 tbsp of grated ginger root. Try adding a slice of lemon for added flavour and benefits! Don't forget to share with us. :)

Studies have shown that exposure to the harsh blue/white light that our electronics give off before bed, prevents our brains from releasing melatonin! Melatonin is a key hormone that controls our bodies internal clock. Thus, using electronics before bed can cause us to have trouble falling and then staying asleep!

For this challenge we ask you to shut off (put down) your phone, computer, tablet and tv after 8pm. Let us know what you chose to do with your down time instead!

Try a new vegetable that you can start incorporating into your diet. There is so much variety out there and it's easy to fall into the habit of using the same produce we are used to buying at the local grocers.
Spring and summer in Nova Scotia bring us delicious local veggies like Asparagus, Beet Greens, Pea shoots, Fiddleheads, Rhubarb, Spring Turnip and Swiss chard. Or be extra brave and try something like Kohlrabi or Cassava.
Share a picture of your new tasty experience or let us know what you tried. Little tip: Noggins had some beautiful fiddleheads in their store this weekend when I passed by the Sante Centre.

Most of us are used to driving from place to place because our schedules are so packed or our public transit system is not as efficient as we need it to be. Walking gives us the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, get some exercise and more naturally transition into the next activity in our day.
So, leave that car at home or park further away from your next destination and get your walk on. Share a photo of your walk or tell us about how it made you feel to ditch your regular mode of transport and use your legs instead :) Don't forget to hashtag #healthymebnc

Add a little colour to your favourite area! Indoors plants are great for increasing the quality of air we breath. They decrease the amount of carbon dioxide in the air and in return increase oxygen levels. They increase humidity and purify our air by removing +80% of toxins! They also make great home decor ;) Some of our favourite house plants include the english ivy, boston fern, aloe vera or peace lily. If you do not have a green thumb try planting a succulent- they are very resilient!

For this challenge stop by your local garden, pick up a new house plant, plant it and send us a picture of your new little friend :). Make sure you do a little research and pick a plant that you are able to correctly care for!

Here it is: Challenge #19 for tomorrow. #healthymeBNC "Grounding" or "earthing" is the act of having a part of our bodies directly contact the earth. It helps to balance the free radicals formed in our bodies! It has also been linked to reduced inflammation and chronic pain, improved sleep and energy, and relieved stress and muscle tension (among many other things). Getting outside to simply put your feet in the grass is the best way to ground yourself and calm the nervous system! Fresh air! Green grass! Vitamin D! What more could you ask for? For this challenge get outside, kick off your shoes and enjoy our wonderful planet's natural healing system! Share your experience with us by taking a picture of your grounding spot! #healthymeBNC

For this challenge let us know what items you donated and where you donated them to. If you do not know where to bring your items, Big Brother Big Sisters has places to donate in Bedford, Halifax and Sackville.

Kombucha is one of my favorite pick me ups! It does contain a little caffeine from tea, but not much. I'm not a big coffee drinker, as I am sensitive to caffeine, and still breastfeeding quite a bit so need to keep it low for Henry. But I do love me some Kombucha!! Get it at Parks Health Shop next door! And for those looking for a caffeine fix you need to check out @cortadotastingroom at the sante centre just down the hall from us!! - Dr. Kathryn #healthymeBNC #santecentre #balance

Not consuming caffeine? GOOD FOR YOU! Work on reducing another form of stimulant or your crux? Sugar? Carbs? Alcohol? Screen time?

Decreasing your caffeine intake has been linked to better quality sleeps, stronger bones and teeth (increased calcium absorption), decreased blood pressure, anxiety, headaches and risk of type II diabetes.

If you find you need an extra boost today try black tea, green tea or matcha!

Share your experience with us by letting us know how much coffee you cut out today and the way this made you feel. Or your plan to reduce the amount of caffeine you consume.
#healthymeBNC ** Remember: while cutting out caffeine it may take a few days to feel better, as you may experience certain withdrawal symptoms.
