Keeping an eye on Syria. On the Golan Heights you can look out over Syria and some days are less than 20 kilometers away from active ISIS fighting. Some days you may even see puffs of smoke in the not-so-far-off-distance. #travelingwiebes

Thankfully, this is as close as I'll probably come to walking through the trenches of war. When you start reading through all the battles that Israel has fought, you can't help but be astounded at the sheer number of miraculous victories. If you're interested in the history of Israel, read the novel 'Exodus' by Leon Uris. It is eye opening. #travelingwiebes

I love the story of how Peter jumped out of his fishing boat and swam/ran to meet Jesus on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. When was the last time I showed a fraction of that passion and joy? When I was there I noticed that the shoreline was very rocky, it wouldn't have been a pleasant thing rushing to shore, but Peter didn't care and I love that. He did whatever it took. I love people who live passionately. #travelingwiebes

I'll forget how cool it was exploring the Old City with my child in my womb and thinking maybe they would come back and walk these same streets someday with me. How fun to see the world through the eyes of a child. #travelingwiebes

I love when I take a picture and think I've captured a story, but it's not until I take a closer look later that I notice the pairing of robes and headphones. #travelingwiebes

Change. It is coming. As background, I took this photo in March 2016 while wandering the markets in the Old City of Jerusalem. At the time, I never could have foreseen the way the political landscape would change. #travelingwiebes #prayforthepeaceofjerusalem

There have been so many times this past week, month, and year when I have read about another terrorist attack only to say to myself, "I've been there, I've stood in that square, I was at that location". It makes the news hit harder and the report of lives lost more painful. #travelingwiebes

The Temple Mount in Jerusalem is probably the most contested piece of land in the world. Once the site of the Jewish Temple, all that remains are the retaining walls. The top of the Temple Mount is controlled by Muslims and is home to the Dome of the Rock. The Western Wall, often referred to as the Wailing Wall, is where Jews gather to pray and mourn the loss of their temple. It is a sobering place. One that demands respect and inspires a prayer for the peace of Jerusalem. #travelingwiebes
